Title: Dear Helle (installation) @ Immigrant Museum Denmark
Medium: postcards and pins
Size: Variable
Year: 2014
‘Dear Helle’ is the title of my solo exhibition at the Immigrant Museum in Farum, Denmark from May 26. - August 29. 2014. Helle Thorning-Schmidt, was the Prime Minister of Denmark from 2011 - 2015, She was a political leader of the Social Democratic Party Denmark
In this exhibition, I made an installation with two big portraits of Helle Thorning-Schmidt. One is a portrait of the Prime Minister on her own and the other one is the famous ‘selfie’ of her together with American President Obama and the Prime Minister of UK, David Cameroun
This installation is made only solely from postcards and pins, installed straight onto the museum wall. Prior to the installation, I had collected free postcards from public spaces and invited the public to write messages addressed to Helle. The people who took part included immigrants, asylum seekers and school children, and they were asked to write about anything that was on their mind
I used over 2500 pins and about 2000 pieces of postcards for this installation. I like the fact that the work was there for only a period of time. It gives this notion of things being temporary - that everything in this world does not last forever, like a man, a building, an empire or like art itself
During the course of the exhibition, the public was invited to write postcards to Helle and pin them on the museum wall. At the end of the exhibition period, Amir personally delivered the written postcards to Helle
I made two images of the former Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning Schmidt with hundreds of postcards pinned direct on the museum’s wall as part of my solo exhibition ‘Dear Helle’, . I worked with Trampoline House, an independent community center in Copenhagen that provides support to the refugees and asylum seekers. The refugees and asylum seekers were invited to write messages to Helle about their condition and challenges living as refugees and asylum seekers in the refugee’s camp. The postcards, which were exhibited during the exhibition were later compiled together and sent to the prime minister office at the end of the show.
The artwork has a temporary lifespan. The way it was installed at the museum symbolizes the circles of life as a reminder that everything is temporary and that the process of doing art is as important as the final product.
