Smashing Egos
Smashing egos
Performance/installation
Length: 3 hours

Smashing egos is a performance that, at first, was meant to be in collaboration with another artist that I had met at a performance festival in Copenhagen. I was looking forward to work with him, and was pleased that I, on a  very short, managed to get him accepted to participate into
biennale. But after only a few days in our residency, I found it impossible to work with him because he had a selfish attitude and was rude to all his surroundings. The idea of working together collapsed. He got banned from continuing in the residency by the curator.

This made me take notice of the curator and how she was distancing herself from the rest of us. In fact this happened from the very start with gestures like not wanting to join us during breakfast, lunch or dinner. This made me take notice of the atmosphere and the environment we were in. I concluded that this created a sense of hierarchy which does not contribute at all to an open creative space.

I decided to make an artwork that reflected the present environment for the biennale with each of us trying to find our space and dealing with our own egos. I chose the topic because it was interesting to see how ego, when not checked or controlled, can make us blind and lead us to make inexpedient
decisions.
