Most of these portraits were Malaysians who most of them were members of Malayan Communist Party fighting for the British colonial government against the Japanese during WW2. Some of them received medals and hailed as heroes after the war was won but later branded as public enemy when they were charged for the killings of Europeans and also due to their involvement in the communist party fighting for Malaysian independence from the colonial government.
